Independence Isn't a Feeling. It's Something You Work For, Fight For — and Fund
Yesterday was the 4th. For us in the United States, that means fireworks and cookouts — or, an entire day of festivities to celebrate one word: independence.
A word that has always been fragile, but feels particularly so right now.
But here’s what I keep telling myself every time fear tries to overshadow my joy: independence isn’t a feeling. It’s not something you declare once and then just have. My ancestral history tells me something about that reality.
What history reminds me of is this: Independence is something you work for, fight for, and yes…fund — decision by decision, dollar by dollar. Continuously.
Which brings me to a much smaller act of funding independence — one you have full control over, and one I’ll be talking about this week: your pricing.
Not because pricing is about money. More like: it’s about the various ways in which you might measure independence, e.g., through the lens of how you're able to spend your time, your energy, and what you can say “no” to.
Underprice yourself, and you’ve quietly signed up for less independence and more work.
Price in a way that serves your business and your personal finances, and you buy back something a lot more interesting than revenue. You buy back the ability to choose.
The choice to take the client or not.
The project or not.
The Tuesday off or not.
In other words, the flexibility to design how you work and live.
That’s the real thesis behind the Pricing Made Human® Masterclass — pricing isn’t a math problem, it’s a freedom problem. And this Thursday, July 9th, I’m walking through exactly how to build a pricing approach that funds the kind of independence you’re actually after — not the version someone else decided you should want.
You are warmly welcome to join us — I’d love to see you on Thursday. [RSVP here]
In the meantime, I’m curious:
How would you approach pricing differently if you were pricing for freedom and independence instead of for approval?
And if you’re reading this as a professional, replace “price” with “salary.” Same effect. Same goal.
About Jacquette
I love to ask questions and spark aha moments. I love to talk about why success with money is about more than just the numbers, and how the cultural impact on the intersection of money, business, and life matters–A LOT! And, I really hope I help people feel seen, heard, and not judged—especially since money is emotional and personal.
