When Your Focus Shifts, Your Energy Follows

Have you ever felt a combination of tiredness and excitement?

That’s me right now.

Before I started writing what you’re reading, I had just finished sketching out the scripts for a new lead magnet I’m creating to promote June’s pricing masterclass.

Switching between these two projects (like I just did) prompted me to think about how shifting gears affects my momentum, creativity, energy, and focus.

It also got me thinking more broadly about our current moment in time…about how choosing what gets our attention isn’t new — but it feels so much harder right now.

These days, it feels like the world is pulling at our attention from every direction. Headlines, crises, economic shifts, business and personal challenges — it’s a lot.

One of the ways I can tell “it’s a lot” is by the way people respond to the ubiquitous question, “How are you?” Heck, I notice it with how I respond to the same question. It’s as if we are all a bit tentative as we linger between hope and fear.

And while staying informed is important and matters, there’s a hidden cost we don’t always talk about:

The more scattered our focus becomes, the more scattered our energy feels.

Focus isn’t just about getting things done; it’s about choosing where we invest our limited emotional, mental, and even financial resources.

Where your focus shifts, your energy inevitably follows — and that shift shapes everything that comes next.

Managing the Noise

So, if you’re feeling mentally, emotionally, or even physically drained right now, you’re not alone. If you’re scared about your financial reserves, again, you’re not alone.

It’s not just the pace of completing your to-do list; it’s the weight of everything competing for your attention. A weight that can easily pull you into reactive mode — responding to whatever feels loudest, rather than intentionally choosing what deserves your focus.

The trouble is: when you let the noise dictate your focus, you also let it dictate your energy, your choices, and ultimately, your results.

You can’t make the world slow down so that you can catch up. You also can’t silence the world.

But you can manage how the noise impacts you by noticing when your attention is being hijacked — and pausing, even briefly, to re-center. A few questions I find helpful are:

  • Is this where I want my focus to be right now?

  • Is what I’m doing moving me toward a goal and/or what I value — or pulling me away from it?

  • Am I being intentional or reactive — right now? What does being intentional and reactive even look like?

  • Did I take a break beyond pausing to eat or use the restroom?

Sometimes, the answer means not doing anything for a few hours (including turning off the news or staying off social media).

Other times, the answer means changing your environment. The other day, I went to the Whitney Museum to see the Amy Sherald exhibit (amazing!); and the week before, I checked out Printemps NYC. Because I’ve been craving beauty and creativity.

Then there are times when you’re being called to give yourself permission to fully dive into a project, a conversation, or a creative idea — without guilt.

It's about choosing to put your energy where it nourishes you, not just where it’s demanded.

And when the world is pulling at your attention, being able to discern this critical difference becomes even more priceless.

Focus is a Form of Power

Every time you choose where to direct your focus, you are reclaiming a little more of your power — over your time, your emotions, your money, your work, and your well-being.

It’s not about tuning out the world or pretending challenges don’t exist.

It’s about making sure your energy isn’t being constantly siphoned away by everything except what actually matters to you.

In a noisy, uncertain world, this kind of focus becomes a quiet, radical act.

It shapes how you show up for yourself, your relationships, your goals, and even your dreams.

Because where your focus shifts, your energy follows.

And where your energy goes, your life grows.

Choose wisely. Choose with care. Choose with love.

This afternoon, even in my tiredness, I’m grateful for the excitement that focus makes possible. It’s not just the projects or tasks I’m juggling, but the way choosing my energy shapes how I show up for them — and for you.

That sense of excitement — of being fully immersed, rather than scattered — is a reminder that focus isn’t just about productivity. It’s about alignment. It’s about creating space for the things that nourish us, even when the world feels overwhelming.

So, as you step into the days ahead, remember: focus is a form of power, too. Particularly when you’re navigating tough circumstances.

Yet, the energy you give to what truly matters will always be worth the investment.

After all, it influences your energy, creativity, decision-making, and money — shaping everything that comes next.

So if you need help proactively shaping what comes next; if you need help blocking out the noise so you can focus more on what nourishes you (rather than on what’s being demanded of you), let’s explore how I can help. We’ll dive deeper into aligning your focus and energy with your goals and dreams.
